Celebrating a Century of Black History Commemorations
As we observe Black History Month 2026, we honor the official theme: "A Century of Black History Commemorations." This milestone marks 100 years since the first organized efforts to recognize the profound contributions of Black Americans. At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we believe that honoring history is not just about looking back—it is about empowering the next generation of trailblazers, changemakers, and visionaries.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission: Igniting Potential
The core Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. For over a century, our organization has stood as a bridge between a child’s current circumstances and their future potential. By pairing "Littles" with "Bigs," we provide the social and emotional support necessary for young people to thrive in school, their careers, and their communities.
Why Representation in Mentorship Matters
In the world of youth mentoring, representation is more than just a buzzword; it is a catalyst for success. Research consistently shows that when a young person sees themselves reflected in a mentor, it builds immediate trust and expands their sense of what is possible. Mentoring Black youth with leaders who share their cultural background allows for a unique level of empathy and guidance. These "Bigs" serve as living proof that obstacles can be overcome, helping to close the mentorship gap that persists in many underrepresented communities.
The Data: Youth Mentoring Impact
The life-changing impact of youth mentoring is backed by decades of proven results. According to recent data, "Littles" in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program achieve remarkable milestones:
- 99% of mentored youth successfully avoid involvement with the juvenile justice system.
- 96% of students in the program are promoted to the next grade level on time.
- 20% of "Littles" are more likely to enroll in college compared to their peers.
Beyond the numbers, the relationship with a positive role model helps Black youth navigate unique systemic challenges while fostering resilience, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging.
